The handle curves gently outward and is decorated with a pyrography (wood-burned) moose head, a burned border line and a shaded area. Rows of gouge-carved dots decorate the base of the handle.

Burl wood was prized in Scandinavia for bowls and drinking vessels because its tightly interlocked grain resists splitting.
