A hand-carved wooden lidded tankard from Scandinavia, likely Swedish, dated 1875. The underside of the lid is carved with the date MARS 25 1875 (March 25, 1875) and the initials N.P., a typical way to mark a gift or a special occasion in 19th century rural Scandinavia.
The entire surface is decorated with fine chip carving: star rosettes, diamond grids, zigzag bands and a stippled background. The domed lid has an interlaced band pattern around a central star, the thumb piece and handle end in carved scrolls, and the tankard stands on three small carved feet. The turned rings around the body give it a strong, classic form.
The wood has a deep, even patina from age and handling. The hinged lid opens and closes properly.
Condition: wear consistent with age. The interior and the underside of the lid were painted white at a later date, and this paint shows wear along the rim. There are small white paint specks on the exterior. Please see all photos for details.
This tankard is a decorative antique and is not intended for food or drink use.
