Antique Swedish Primitive Wall Hook, Hand Painted Wooden Coat Hook with 1857 Date, Folk Art

A traditional Swedish wall hook with a hand-carved wooden hook mounted on a long painted backboard, a classic piece of Scandinavian rural craft.

The front is hand painted in deep blue with rust-orange borders and three six-petal rosettes in white, rust and yellow. The initials H.A.D. and the date 1857 appear between the rosettes, and a bouquet of roses with trailing buds sits above the hook.

The backboard and hook are old, handmade pieces. The back shows hand-worked wood, old woodworm holes, hand-forged nail heads and remains of the original blue paint along the edges. The painted decoration on the front appears to be later than the board itself, so we describe this piece as an antique Swedish wall hook with later hand-painted folk art decoration.

Use it as a coat, hat, towel or bag hook in a hallway, or hang it as a decorative folk art wall piece. Two small screw eyes are attached for hanging.

Condition: wear consistent with age, small paint losses on the hook and edges, old woodworm holes on the back. Please see all photos for details.
