Antique Swedish Mora Clock, Leksand, Dalarna, Dated 1829 – Rare Single-Hand Movement – Original Folk Painting – Exceptional Original Example

Standing as a remarkable survivor from the early 19th century, this authentic Swedish Mora clock from Leksand, Dalarna is the kind of untouched original that collectors spend years searching for. Examples that keep so many of their original parts are becoming increasingly scarce, even in Sweden.

The case retains its original hand-painted Dala folk painting, dated 1829 on the trunk. Rich floral bouquets decorate the belly and the base, the hood carries a painted faux-grain border, and the deep red-brown ground has the authentic surface patina that only nearly two centuries can create. The clock has never been repainted or overpainted, so its historical character and craftsmanship remain fully intact.

Above the dial, the crest bears a six-petal rosette, known as a hexafoil, one of the oldest protective symbols in European folk tradition. In Scandinavian homes it was painted or carved on wooden household objects to guard the family from harm, and finding it still in place on a clock of this age is a rare and meaningful detail.

The painted dial is signed and marked "Leksand", linking the clock directly to the clockmaking tradition of the Dalarna parishes around Lake Siljan.

The clock keeps its original early 19th-century mechanical movement, together with its original brass hand, original glass, original pendulum and original weights. Complete examples in this condition are exceedingly rare. The movement is untested and sold as found, preserving its originality exactly as it has survived through generations.

One of the most desirable features is the single-hand configuration. Early Mora clocks with one original brass hand are highly sought after and represent one of the earliest and most collectible forms of Swedish clockmaking, reflecting the simple elegance of rural Scandinavian craftsmanship.

Minor age-related wood movement and slight lifting of paint at the lower section are present, entirely consistent with an untouched pine clock approaching 200 years of age. These are signs of authenticity, confirming that the original painted surface has survived without modern restoration.
