Antique Wool Needlepoint Tapestry in Gilded Baroque Frame – English Cottage Garden Scene
A large, very old hand-stitched wool needlepoint tapestry of a cottage garden: a red-roofed country house with tall chimneys, stone garden steps leading up between flowering borders, delphiniums, roses and spring blossom, framed by old trees under a soft clouded sky.
Every stitch was worked by hand in wool, many decades ago. The fine, even stitching and the softly aged colors show the patience and skill that went into this piece, a kind of handwork that is rarely made today.
It is presented in a substantial ornate gilded wood frame, carved in Baroque style with scrolling acanthus ornament and a pale inner liner that sets off the needlework.
