An exceptionally unusual pre-war Art Deco porcelain soup tureen by Gebrüder Benedikt, Czecho-Slovakia, featuring a striking black stylized deer and woodland design with elegant gilt detailing.
Dating from the Art Deco period, most likely the 1920s–1930s, this remarkable covered serving tureen combines a beautifully architectural form with an extraordinarily graphic decoration. Stylized deer appear among abstract trees, foliage and geometric landscape elements, executed almost entirely in black against the warm ivory-white porcelain. Fine black linear details and delicate gold edging complete the design.
The form itself is equally distinctive. The tureen has an elongated, softly faceted body with sculptural side handles and a fitted lid crowned by a geometric square finial. The combination of the angular silhouette, restrained gilding and almost modernist black animal imagery gives the piece a particularly strong Art Deco character.
The underside carries the original Gebrüder Benedikt / Czecho-Slovakia factory mark, confirming its manufacture by the historic Czechoslovak porcelain maker. Additional factory numbers are also present.
We have researched this decoration extensively and have been unable to locate another documented example of this exact black deer and woodland pattern. For this reason, it is an especially interesting piece for collectors of early Czechoslovak porcelain, Art Deco ceramics and unusual European tableware.
The tureen measures approximately 31 × 21 × 16 cm (12.2 × 8.3 × 6.3 in).
This is an authentic antique/vintage piece and its age is visible. There is wear and discoloration consistent with use and age, including wear to the gilding and signs of age to the porcelain and interior. These characteristics have deliberately not been digitally removed from our condition photographs. Please examine all photographs carefully, particularly the interior and detail images, as they form an important part of the description.
A wonderfully graphic piece that works not only as collectible Art Deco serveware, but also as a striking decorative object in a vintage, eclectic or collected interior.
