A hand-carved wooden lidded tankard, carved from a single piece of figured wood, most likely birch, in the Scandinavian folk art tradition.
The wood shows a striking natural grain with dark, wavy, flame-like lines running across the whole body, the base and the domed lid. Carved rings shape the neck and the foot. The domed lid is topped with a small carved knob and opens with a hand-forged iron lever that runs through a slot carved in the top of the handle. The handle is carved separately and set into the body. The interior has a dark patina.
Measurements: height 22 cm (8.7 in), width at the handle 14 cm (5.5 in).
Condition: good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. A small gap around the lid knob, a crack line inside the rim where the handle joins the body and light surface wear. This tankard is for decorative use only. Please see all photos for details.
