Large Swedish Birch Burl Bowl with Handle, Hand Carved Primitive Masur Kåsa with Moose Pyrography, Folk Art

A large hand-carved bowl with a handle, carved from a single burl, most likely Swedish masur birch, in the shape of a traditional Scandinavian kåsa.

The burl wood shows its natural flecked masur grain across the whole surface, with an organic, irregular form that follows the shape of the original burl. The handle curves gently outward and is decorated with a pyrography (wood-burned) moose head, a burned border line and a shaded area. Rows of gouge-carved dots decorate the base of the handle.

Burl wood was prized in Scandinavia for bowls and drinking vessels because its tightly interlocked grain resists splitting. Every burl bowl has a one-of-a-kind shape.

Use it as a striking centerpiece, a fruit or bread bowl for dry foods, or display it as a sculptural folk art piece.
