A pair of carved wooden candle wall sconces stamped Steneby on the back, the mark of Steneby Hemslöjdsförening, the handicraft association of Dals Långed in western Sweden.
Each sconce has a fan-shaped back panel with a pointed arch top, covered in deep gouge carving that creates a rippling, textured surface. The light moves across the carved ridges like ripples on water. A carved candle cup sits at the bottom of each panel. The backs are hand faceted and fitted with a metal hanging eye, ready to hang. One is also marked 212 in pencil.
Pieces from Steneby Hemslöjdsförening are sought after by collectors of Swedish handcraft and mid-century Scandinavian design.
The pair works well flanking a mirror, a doorway or a piece of art, and adds warm, textured wood to a Scandinavian, brutalist, rustic or mid-century interior.
Period: mid-20th century.
Measurements (each): height 28 cm (11 in), maximum width 15.5 cm (6.1 in).
Condition: good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. Wax residue in the candle cups and small marks along the edges. Please see all photos for details.
