A large vintage Scandinavian wooden tankard with a hinged lid, hand painted in the rosemaling folk art tradition.
The staved pine body is painted in a sponged brown finish and decorated by hand with acanthus scrolls in yellow, green and deep red. The shaped handle, the wooden hoops and the carved lid handle are painted in dark green. The hinged lid opens with a carved thumb lever.
Most likely made in the mid-20th century. The bottom is marked “4.” in pencil.
Measurements: height 33 cm (13 in), base diameter 21 cm (8.3 in).
Condition: vintage condition with visible wear. Some staves have separated, with an open gap near the base and a crack at the rim. The hoops have shifted, showing unpainted wood beneath, and there are small paint losses. The interior is unfinished pine. This tankard is for decorative use only and will not hold liquid.
