A truly exceptional piece of Swedish folk art, this large needlepoint wall hanging is a masterclass in the allmoge tradition — the centuries-old Scandinavian craft of decorative needlework rooted in rural village life. The central field, worked on a warm cream ground, depicts a symmetrical composition of stylised tulips, carnations and pomegranate blooms flanked by pairs of facing birds, all connected by sinuous green stems in a design that echoes the great textile traditions of 17th and 18th century Sweden.
The central panel is framed by a wide geometric border in deep navy, olive green and burgundy, filled with diamond and cross motifs that give the piece the gravitas of a fine tapestry. The piece is presented on its original black wrought iron hanging rod with decorative scrollwork — ready to hang straight from the wall.
