A truly exceptional piece of mid-century Swedish embroidery, this large landscape wall art depicts a stark and beautiful winter scene with the quiet drama of a Scandinavian countryside in late autumn or early winter. A magnificent bare oak dominates the foreground, its gnarled trunk rendered in grey satin stitch and its intricate branching silhouette worked in fine dark brown stem stitch with a bird’s nest nestled in the upper branches. Behind it, a serene pastoral landscape unfolds — a white Swedish farmhouse with a grey roof, a row of traditional red Falun-painted barns, open fields, a wooden fence, and a frozen lake or river in the foreground, all worked in a restrained palette of grey, green, red and white that perfectly captures the stillness of a Nordic winter morning.
The piece is worked in a combination of satin stitch, stem stitch and long stitch on a natural burlap ground and mounted on a solid wooden stretcher frame with a narrow black border edge — ready to hang. The scale and compositional ambition of this piece set it apart from typical folk embroidery — it has the quality of a fine landscape painting.
