A small vintage Swedish butter churn, a smörkärna, made by hand from wooden staves bound with split-branch hoops, with a lid and a dasher.

The churn has a warm reddish-brown patina on the staves, framed by three pairs of honey-colored hoops. The lid has a center hole for the dasher, and the dasher ends in a carved cross piece. The base is signed in pencil, reading A. Persson, Sikfors 1960. Sikfors is a small village in Norrbotten, in the far north of Sweden.

A charming piece of Swedish rural handcraft, lovely on a kitchen shelf, in a cabin or as part of a Scandinavian folk art collection.

Measurements: height 32 cm (12.6 in) including the dasher.

Condition: vintage condition with wear consistent with age. The top of one stave at the rim is chipped, the lid has a crack and a small notch on the edge, and there are small holes near the base and hairline gaps between staves. The dasher appears lighter than the churn and may be a later replacement. For decorative use only. Please see all photos for details.
