Wall Plaque, School of Fish – Blue Ceramic Relief by Dietlinde Hein for Knabstrup, Denmark, 1960s
A striking mid-century modern ceramic wall plaque designed by Dietlinde Hein (1940–1977) for Knabstrup, Denmark, during her tenure at the pottery between 1960 and 1965. The relief depicts a lively school of fish in vivid electric blue glaze – cobalt and turquoise – set against an unglazed warm brown chamotte ground, creating a bold and graphic contrast that is immediately recognisable as the best of Danish modernist studio ceramics.
The composition is confident and playful: fish of varying sizes swim freely across the surface, their forms overlapping and dynamic. Signed on the front in the lower right corner with Hein's signature D. Hein; stamped on the reverse with the Knabstrup mark.
Dietlinde Hein is one of the most collectible designers associated with Knabstrup, and her fish plaques in particular are highly sought after by collectors of Scandinavian mid-century ceramics.
Materials: glazed stoneware, chamotte clay body.
Condition: Good vintage condition. Light wear consistent with age. Please see all photos as part of the description.
Dimensions (Width / Height / Depth):
11.4 in / 5.9 in / 0.8 in
